San Francisco Hosts 2024 Joint Mathematics Meetings from Jan. 3 to 6

Nearly 6,000 attendees will gather in San Francisco this week for the world’s largest annual mathematics event

San Francisco (Jan. 3, 2024) – This week, San Francisco welcomes the 2024 Joint Mathematics Meetings, the world's largest annual mathematics gathering, marking the city’s first convention of the new year. Organized by the American Mathematical Society, the event takes place from Jan. 3 to 6 and is expected to draw nearly 6,000 attendees.

The event is returning to San Francisco for the first time since 2010, and the American Mathematical Society expects the highest attendance since the pandemic. Attendees from around the world will meet at the LEED Platinum-certified Moscone Center to hear from mathematicians covering the latest research on pressing topics, including artificial intelligence, climate change, and educational and social justice.

“We’re truly excited to meet in person in San Francisco for the world’s largest math gathering,” said Lucy Maddock, interim executive director of the American Mathematical Society. “The Joint Mathematics Meetings, known as the JMM, will connect nearly 6,000 members of the math community, many from the Bay Area. The JMM program will include talks, displays, career fairs, a free day of math fun for math enthusiasts, and much more. This year’s JMM sessions will range from theoretical research to applied math to critical issues such as artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, and the global spread of disease.”

San Francisco Travel reported the JMM will generate an estimated $7.4 million in economic impact for the city based on Destinations International’s event impact calculator.

Nearly 50% of the conference attendees will be overnight visitors, boosting occupancy for the San Francisco hotel community. The San Francisco Marriott Marquis will serve as the headquarters hotel for the conference.

“We are honored to be the headquarters hotel for the Joint Mathematics Meetings, where intellect and innovation converge,” said John Anderson, General Manager at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. “As the hub for this esteemed gathering, The San Francisco Marriott Marquis eagerly welcomes brilliant minds from diverse mathematical realms, fostering an atmosphere of discovery and collaboration that is perfectly aligned with the innovative spirit of San Francisco!”
